Maggie O'Farrell's writing is exquisite. She puts you right into the story.
This story will aim for you right between the eyes. It will gut you. You will not see it coming.
Felt more like the miss of the story rather than the culmination
This book is 32 hours on audiobook and over 1,000 pages in hardcover. Large cast of characters set in the world of online gaming. Hard to follow in audiobook format. Ending anticlimactic. Overly long.
I enjoy historical fiction. I also like reading about strong empowered women. I found exploring the relationship from Lorena Hickock's view point intriguing. (Given the time frame and Eleanor Roosevelt's status, I doubt you will ever get a true take on her inner life.) As has been noted, this is novel. It's a version of what might have happened. I think I would have preferred it more if it were a memoir, but I liked the exploration. I found it very contemplative. Not my favorite read, but enjoyable enough.
Wonderful story about friendship and loving someone as a friend, accepting the love of someone as a friend, knowing that love can be deeper, more painful, and more enduring in friendship. Life is not idyllic but it can be lasting in a meaningful way.
Disappointed. I tend to avoid books that receive a lot of hype. For a psychological thriller there was no thrill. The characters felt flat and did not generate much empathy from me as the reader.
Too much math and science for my taste but found the friendship intriguing.
