love, regret, self-discovery, acceptance, moving on

Synopsis:

In Crash and Burn, Michael Reid brings a powerful conclusion to the emotional journey started in Now You’re Gone and All I Ever Wanted. This time, the narrator who has been present in the background of the previous stories — offering insights, reflections, and witnessing the highs and lows of the protagonist's experiences — steps into the spotlight as the lead character. Their voice, once a companion and observer, now takes center stage to confront their own path of love, regret, and redemption.

Having journeyed alongside the central figures in the earlier books, this character carries the weight of shared experiences and emotional scars. Their perspective is deeply shaped by the lessons learned from witnessing lost love, misunderstandings, and the pursuit of second chances. Now, they face their own personal reckoning, navigating the aftermath of choices made and the emotional collapse that follows.

The novel explores how this character, once a voice of reason and reflection, must now apply those same insights to their own life. Themes of heartbreak, resilience, and self-discovery are amplified as they confront their past, seek closure, and attempt to rebuild amidst the wreckage of their decisions. The journey is raw and introspective, blending the familiar emotional depth of the previous novels with a fresh focus on a character who was always present but never fully seen.

By shifting the focus to this narrator-turned-protagonist, Crash and Burn delivers a layered exploration of how love's impact reverberates through different lives. The story captures the struggle to rise from the ashes of emotional turmoil, ultimately seeking hope and redemption after a long journey of witnessing others' pain and now facing their own.

Excerpt:

Prologue: Searching For Her

"My journey started in January 2020. I was younger than I am now, around twenty-four years old. My life was busy; however, I was longing to meet someone and make a serious commitment. Like most young adults today, I joined Badoo, Tinder, and POF. I eventually found someone I truly adored, but I didn’t realize it at the time. This love turned into a curse, a feeling of always longing for her, knowing I could never have her again.

This book details our story — our interactions, our love, our affections for one another — and ultimately how life managed to get in the way. It prevented something truly amazing from happening between us. Now, I live a life of regret, reflecting on my choices. At times, she comes back to haunt me, not just in my mind but in my heart. I long for her, but I can never be with her again. She was my soulmate, something I cherished but struggled to show. I kept my emotions hidden, fearing she would want something I couldn’t give soon enough.

Part of me truly loved her and wanted to build a life with her. But my fear, my choices, and my circumstances held me back. I wish I could change it all, but life doesn’t allow for rewrites."
