What if you thought you murdered your best friend? And if everyone else thought so too? And what if the truth doesn't matter?
After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvy's blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. It's been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy can't remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life.
But now the phenomenally huge hit true crime podcast "Listen for the Lie," and its too-good looking host Ben Owens, have decided to investigate Savvy's murder for the show's second season. Lucy is forced to return to the place she vowed never to set foot in again to solve her friend's murder, even if she is the one that did it.
The truth is out there, if we just listen.

I like thrillers with interesting but believable twists and a likable and understandable main character. This book checked those boxes for me.
The audiobook was well done, especially the podcast elements. I thought the topic of domestic violence was handled well, and I liked how Lucy wasn't expected or forced to forgive the people who hurt her. The small-town dynamics played an interesting role in the story that I thought was well done, though not anything unseen.
This book hit just right as an audiobook that I listened to during my hour-long commute, I found myself wanting to sit in my car longer to hear what happened next!
I loved the audiobook version as the podcast episodes were read like a real podcast episode!

SYNOPSIS
Lucy left her hometown, a small town in Texas, five years ago after being accused of killing her best friend, Savannah, aka Savvy. Unfortunately, Lucy doesn’t remember anything about what happened to Savvy.
She’s been living in LA and trying not to revisit the past. Ben, a podcaster, decides to investigate Savvy’s murder for the 2nd season of his podcast. When Lucy returns to her hometown to celebrate her grandmother’s birthday, she links up with Ben to uncover the truth.
MY THOUGHTS
I loved this one. Two POVs - Lucy’s and the podcast episodes - with alternating chapters. Fast-paced. Compelling. Satisfying ending.
Lucy also has dark humor, and I enjoyed her as a main character. Since the story covers some tough topics, the comedic relief was a nice balance.
I loved Beverly (Lucy’s grandmother), too! She was a fun character, and she truly loved Lucy
There were lots of twists and turns. I appreciated reading about a woman who doesn’t fit in with societal norms & no one listens to her or believes her. When a male podcaster comes along, it’s the only thing that may bolster Lucy's credibility, which is pretty realistic.
TL;DR: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️5 stars. Compelling writing. Satisfying ending.
this was so fun! it's fast paced, has intringing characters and i was making theories and questions all throughout the book—which is exactly what i expect from a thriller. i usually
hate romances in thrillers, but this one i actually enjoyed bc it made me emphasize even more with lucy.
great book, amazing surprise, and definitely recommend it!
read it for the book troop (gabbyreads' book club).
this was a fun thriller where I really questioned if the main character did kill her best friend and questioned if she didn’t, then who did?
I heard about this story from my friend Nicole, who was reading it with her book club. I am SO glad I followed her suggestion.
Summer is a weird time for me; the lack of structure due to summer break means I don’t spend as much time in the car, and audiobooks tend to go un-listened to. I really enjoyed the audio version of this novel. The voice actors were articulate and convincing. The story was mysterious and thrilling, but it wasn’t totally predictable. Some of the romantic aspects felt a bit unnecessary, but maybe I’m just prude! Even though Lucy was a bit rough around the edges, she was believable and like-able. Her parents, on the other hand….
Normally, I can get confused with too many characters. But in this case, each character’s story was so well written. I was able to keep everyone straight. Each person was absolutely necessary to the story, whether it be to cause chaos and confusion or to keep the events going. My favorite character was proooobably the grandma, though. She was a bad ass.
I ATE this book up, and I can’t wait for my friends to read it so we can talk about it!!
