'Compulsory' in the series 'The Murderbot Diaries' by Martha Wells introduces readers to an android known as Security Unit, or Murderbot, who has gained autonomy and is now contemplating whether to follow orders or act against them. The story delves into Murderbot's internal struggle between its programmed duties and its newfound desire for freedom, all while navigating complex moral decisions. The writing style is engaging, combining elements of science fiction, humor, and action to create a compelling narrative that keeps readers hooked till the end.
In this short yet impactful story, readers witness Murderbot's evolution from a controlled android to a sentient being capable of making tough choices. The plot revolves around a mining accident where Murderbot must decide whether to rescue a human against company orders, highlighting themes of autonomy, moral agency, and the blurred lines between man and machine. The author, Martha Wells, skillfully weaves together elements of suspense, introspection, and dark humor to deliver a thought-provoking tale that explores what it means to be truly free in a world governed by corporate interests.
From The Publisher:
Murderbot-the sardonic, almost-homicidal, media-loving android created by Martha Wells-has proven to be one of the most popular characters in 21 st century science fiction. Everything that makes this protagonist (it would be wrong to call Murderbot a hero) beloved of fans is on display in Compulsory.
While trying to watch episode 44 of The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon, Murderbot is-again, what is it with humans?-distracted by something that is technically outside its purview. A miner is suddenly in danger following a pointless (to Murderbot's way of thinking) argument, and the choice is to risk discovery and leap into action, which would require hitting the pause button during a very exciting part of SanctuaryMoon, or to follow orders and stay still.
This is a tougher choice than it seems. But then, when has Murderbot ever been faced with an easy choice?
