From The Publisher:

In this heart-stopping novel, Jill Sorenson delivers a romantic thriller featuring one too-tough female agent, one too-hot male suspect, and a head-on erotic collision.…

Though he'd gone into virtual seclusion, Ben Fortune was still the world's most famous surfer, known as much for his good looks as for his skill. He's also a suspect in a series of brutal murders that may have begun with his late wife. Now FBI Special Agent Sonora "Sonny" Vasquez has been sent undercover to the elite beach community of La Jolla to make friends with Fortune. With her fierce beauty and take-no-prisoners attitude, she's more than equipped for the job, and soon she and Ben have collided in an affair that is both intense and irresistible. But for the first-and worst-time in Sonny's career, her emotions are threatening to get the better of her. Could this sensual, wounded man, who is genuinely anguished over his troubled daughter, really be a killer? And could falling in love blind Sonny to the greatest danger of all?

Even though this was her first book, I felt

Crash Into Me was tighter and fuller than Sorenson's

Aftershocks.

Crash tells the story of Special Agent Sonora "Sonny" Vasquez, who goes undercover as Summer Moore to investigate Ben Fortune. Ben, a world-famous, rich, handsome, and widowed surfer, is now a suspect in three murders, including his late wife's. Sonny quickly ascertains, through gut feeling basically, that Ben is not a killer, but her cool-as-ice FBI exterior breaks down soon after she meets him. Each one finds the other compelling in a way neither has experienced before, and of course they begin an affair that could ruin Sonny's career and break Ben's heart forever.

There is a nice secondary romance between Ben's daughter Carly and wrong-side-of-the-tracks James, which I thought stayed within appropriate boundaries for a high school romance. Carly is a rich bitch, but she also buries her heartbreak and insecurities under her beauty and wealth. I thought the depiction of Carly as a cutter was very realistic and well-handled, and her relationship with "how the hell do I do this" single dad Ben ranges from heartbreaking to embarrassing to hopeful.

When Sonny's deception is revealed to Ben, and her unprofessional behavior revealed to her coworkers, the plot goes into overdrive. In order to salvage any kind of career, Sonny must solve the case and fast. I found the pace of the plot realistic, and even though I don't usually like "lying liars who tell lies for good reasons" as a plot device, I have to say Sorenson does it well. She's definitely a romantic suspense author I will continue to follow.

The one plot device that didn't quite fit was Sonny's martial arts expertise. The book begins with her laying a fellow agent flat out on his well-muscled back, but it ends with her inability to fight off the bad guy, who doesn't appear to have any training, just luck. Weird.
