Others are put off by outdated perspectives, including racial stereotypes and limited roles for female and non-white characters - a reflection of the book's early 20th-century origins. A book that holds up surprisingly well in 2021, but not completely.

This was a book I read for my book club, and one which I was pleasantly surprised by. It is full of action, even if it is a different type of action than I'd expect in a modern historical naval fiction novel. It is enjoyable, well paced, and the main character is both likable and interesting enough to drive the story.

I went into this book intentionally viewing it through the lens of the time period, and because of that I enjoyed it quite a bit. The writing style is date of course, but the story is still a great one. The main character is so well built up and presented that everything he does makes sense, and doesn't make me step back at any points to question his decisions.

My only real issue with the novel was the lack of the action. It is more like general fiction that also takes place on ships. Where we'd want some good ol' swashbuckling, instead we get a summary of the battle and the character interactions afterwards. This is a pretty big hit to the rating of the book for me, but I also understand it is a example of the time it was written in. If this was released last year I would not be too happy with it, and because of that it is a solid middle of the road book. Nothing like the well known historical naval fiction series, but still a decent enough read.
