Servant of the Crown is a novella in the Powder Mage series that delves into the backstory of Field Marshal Tamas, his rise through the ranks of Adro's army, and his relationship with Erika. The story is fast-paced, filled with action, suspense, and political schemes, showcasing the author's ability to create a compelling world with diverse characters. The novella provides insight into Tamas' past, his motivations, and the challenges he faces as he navigates through a corrupt military and power struggles within the kingdom.

From The Publisher:

Captain Tamas is an ambitious young officer in the Adran army. As a commoner, he is one of very few without noble blood to hold a rank. When he challenges the son of a duke over an insult, the subsequent duel lands him in hot water with the nobility and the royal cabal of Privileged sorcerers. Tamas is soon drawn into a conflict that goes to the very highest office in the land, and his only ally is the most unlikely of people; a young noblewoman named Erika, who needs Tamas to teach her how to wield her powers as a powder mage. Thirty-five years before the events of Promise of Blood.

This second book of the series takes place shortly after prologue short story one, Forsworn. This is another great read and another 5 star review.

This continues where Forsworn left off, and gives us insight to the beginnings of Tamas, here a Captain. It is a quick and fun read, and not a must for the series, but it is here, so why not. Depth to a character before the novel begins is new to me, and I like this very much.

This is my second favorite of the five prologue shorts.
