Who Would Like This Book:

If you're into adrenaline-pumping science fiction with a horror twist, "Ancestor" is a fantastic pick! Fans of Michael Crichton's "Jurassic Park" and lovers of creature features will feel right at home with its recipe of plausible science, ethical quandaries, and high-stakes action. The story's blend of genetic engineering nightmares and survival thrills is made even more vivid by memorable characters - heroic, villainous, and even canine. Expect creative, grisly suspense that doesn't let up and enough action to keep you turning pages late into the night.

Who May Not Like This Book:

If you're after deep literary themes or nuanced, poetic dialogue, this might not be your cup of tea - some found the prose a bit clunky or the action too pulpy. Readers who dislike graphic violence, blood, or over-the-top villains may feel put off, and if you crave slow-burning character studies or realism over popcorn thrills, you might find "Ancestor" a bit much. Also, monster lovers beware: the creatures take a while to fully show up, which might frustrate those expecting non-stop monster mayhem from page one.

A wild ride of science-gone-wrong, gory horror, and breakneck action - perfect for fans of Crichton, creature features, and fast-paced thrillers. Not highbrow, but definitely fun.

About:

Ancestor by Scott Sigler is a thrilling science fiction horror novel that explores the consequences of genetic experimentation gone wrong. Set in a biotech firm called Genada, the story follows researchers who create a genetically engineered creature, known as the Ancestor, to serve as an incubator for transplantable organs. However, when the project takes a dark turn due to greed and hubris, the researchers find themselves trapped in a deadly situation, hunted by monstrous predators and their psychotic colleagues. The book is fast-paced, taut, and exciting, blending elements of science, horror, and action to create a gripping narrative that keeps readers on the edge of their seats.

Sigler's writing style in Ancestor showcases a blend of complex narrative, character interaction, and suspense-building, reminiscent of a screenplay. While the novel features heroes, villains, high-octane action sequences, and scenes of suspense, some readers feel that it falls short of being the engaging sci-fi action horror novel it could have been. The book delves into themes of power struggle between humans and genetically engineered creatures, offering a rollercoaster ride of terror, science, and thrills that will keep readers engrossed until the end.

Setting:

The narrative takes place in a remote wintery research facility in Canada, enhancing the themes of isolation and survival.

Pacing:

The pacing starts slowly but accelerates to an engaging level, particularly in the action sequences, though it has moments that feel less dynamic.
PAUL FISCHER HAD always pictured the end of the world being a bit more … industrial. Loud machines, cars crashing, people screaming, guns a-blazing. Perhaps a world-breaking bomb shattering the earth ...

From The Publisher:

"The ancestors are out there…you have to believe me."

From acclaimed author Scott Sigler-New York Times bestselling creator of Infected and Contagious-comes a tale of genetic experimentation's worst nightmare come true.

Every five minutes, a transplant candidate dies while waiting for a heart, a liver, a kidney. Imagine a technology that could provide those life-saving transplant organs for a nominal fee … and imagine what a company would do to get a monopoly on that technology.

On a remote island in the Canadian Arctic, PJ Colding leads a group of geneticists who have discovered this holy grail of medicine. By reverse-engineering the genomes of thousands of mammals, Colding's team has dialed back the evolutionary clock to re-create humankind's common ancestor. The method? Illegal. The result? A computer-engineered living creature, an animal whose organs can be implanted in any person, and with no chance of transplant rejection.

There's just one problem: these ancestors are not the docile herd animals that Colding's team envisioned. Instead, Colding's work has given birth to something big, something evil.

With these killer creatures on the prowl, Colding and the woman he loves must fight to survive - even as government agents close in to shut the project down, and the deep-pocketed company backing this research proves to have its own cold-blooded agenda.

As the creators become the prey in the ultimate battle for survival, Scott Sigler takes readers on the ultimate thrill-ride-and offers a chilling cautionary account of what can happen when hubris, greed, and madness drive scientific experimentation past the brink of reason.

There isn’t a single redeemable character in this entire book except for Mookie.

Two stars for the detailed science and the ancestors—the parts of this book that were actually captivating. Colding and Sara were okay, but the language used throughout the whole book was actively working towards making me dislike them. Bummer.

I found myself actively rooting for the creatures by the end. Go baby Mcbutter, go!
