A solid entry that changes the pace of the series and the stakes. After Sydney and Adrian are discovered as a couple, Sydney is swept away to reeducation by the Alchemists, and Adrian falls into a cycle of drinking to dull his despair. In the reeducation camp, Sydney is tortured in solitary before being released to mingle with other prisoners, and to my surprise she trusts some of them. The stakes in reeducation are so high, I was surprised Sydney doesn't assume all of them are narcs. Meanwhile, Adrian has to find a way to rescue Sydney and then keep her safe from the Alchemists on the outside.
I thought both characters behave true to their natures, even though I cringed every time Sydney opens up to a fellow inmate. The book ends a bit abruptly, with a lot left to resolve of this plot and a major twist for the next one.
