From The Publisher:

Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets-and human lives.

In The Indigo Spell , Sydney was torn between the Alchemist way of life and what her heart and gut were telling her to do. And in one breathtaking moment that Richelle Mead fans will never forget, she made a decision that shocked even her. . . .

But the struggle isn't over for Sydney. As she navigates the aftermath of her life-changing decision, she still finds herself pulled in too many directions at once. Her sister Zoe has arrived, and while Sydney longs to grow closer to her, there's still so much she must keep secret. Working with Marcus has changed the way she views the Alchemists, and Sydney must tread a careful path as she harnesses her profound magical ability to undermine the way of life she was raised to defend. Consumed by passion and vengeance, Sydney struggles to keep her secret life under wraps as the threat of exposure-and re-education-looms larger than ever.

Pulses will race throughout this smoldering fourth installment in the New York Times bestselling Bloodlines series, where no secret is safe.

I've waited a couple days to write this review because this book gave me a lot of feelings, but I also don't feel it was the strongest installment in the series. The chapters alternate between Adrian and Sydney's points of view, which seems appropriate since this book really explores the ramifications of Sydney's decision to start a relationship with Adrian. Such a relationship goes against everything she is supposed to believe, and it would be pretty shocking for his people, too. Throw in the fact that Sydney's little sister Zoe is on campus and things get more complicated; Zoe wants to be a perfect little Alchemist just like she thinks Sydney is, but secrets and a lifetime of brainwashing begin to tear the sisters apart.

So we find out in this book that Adrian did a Very Bad Thing in his past. Sydney is shocked and pissed and all the things she should be when she finds out.....and then she forgives him. I don't know how I feel about this, since I don't think I would forgive someone for that. In fact I think I would use my secret witch powers to set him on fire. But for the plot, it is necessary for Sydney to commit to Adrian on a deep, permanent level, so I can see why Mead would throw up a roadblock like this.

And then the book ends with a great twist - but also one of my personal pet peeves. When I love a character like I love Sydney, seeing her in a situation like this one makes me want to claw my skin off. Just a weird personal thing. Great ending, though. Overall, this book felt like setup for the end of the series: get Sydney and Adrian solidly together, make progress on important magical fronts, and then bring things to a boil. Waiting for the next book is going to kill me.
