Who Would Like This Book:
This memoir is a rollercoaster ride through the messy, unpredictable world of startups. Phil Knight’s storytelling is genuine, funny, and incredibly candid - he doesn’t paint himself as a hero, but as a guy figuring things out as he goes. It’s packed with honest insights on entrepreneurship, perseverance, and the whirlwind behind building a now-legendary brand. Business enthusiasts, aspiring entrepreneurs, and anyone who loves a story about overcoming odds will get a lot out of it - but even general readers say it’s as gripping as a novel!
Who May Not Like This Book:
If you’re looking for a step-by-step business manual or loads of leadership advice, this isn’t it. Some readers found the middle sections a bit slow or bogged down with the nitty-gritty of finance and logistics. Others mentioned they'd prefer a continuation - including Nike's journey after the 1980s, bigger coverage of marketing moves, or a deeper dive into social controversies around the brand. If you’re not into memoirs or want more focus on personal development takeaways, you might not vibe with it.

You must forget your limits.
It was only when Nike founder Phil Knight got cut from the baseball team as a high school freshman that his mother suggested he try out for track instead. Knight made the track team and found that not only could he run fast but also, more importantly, he liked it.
Ten years later, young and searching, Knight borrowed fifty dollars from his father and launched a company with one simple mission: import high quality running shoes from Japan. Selling the shoes from the trunk of his car to start, he and his gang of friends and runners built one of the most successful brands ever.

“The cowards never started and the weak died along the way. That leaves us.”
Quick page turner with an interesting story line and some fortune cookie type wisdom sprinkled throughout. His unquenchable desire to make and sell the best shoes was fascinating to read and also was a cool look into the industrial history of manufacturing in the East.
