Notes:

The book is called "Game Changer" and is written by Rachel Reid.
It features a contemporary MM (male-male) sports romance theme, primarily focusing on hockey.
The main characters are Scott Hunter, a closeted NHL player, and Kip Grady, a smoothie shop worker.
Scott first meets Kip while ordering a blueberry smoothie before a hockey game, establishing a lucky charm trend.
The story explores themes of closeted sexuality and the struggles associated with coming out in professional sports.
The relationship develops in secret, highlighting the emotional struggles of both characters, particularly Kip, who feels isolated.
The book has a dual point of view (POV) narration, but both characters are voiced by the same narrator, which some found confusing.
The story is described as sweet, sexy, and low angst, focusing more on the character dynamics than heavy conflict.
It includes a significant emotional arc for Scott as he navigates his identity and fears surrounding being out in public.
Readers expressed a desire for more hockey-themed romances, as they felt other sports genres had more representation in romance literature.
The audiobook edition faced criticism for the narrator's inconsistent accents, particularly affecting the perceived authenticity of character voices.

The romantic journey culminates during the Stanley Cup playoffs, adding to the story's stakes and emotional tension.

From The Publisher:

"Reid's hockey-themed Game Changers series continues on its red-hot winning streak." - Publishers Weekly , starred review for Common Goal

New York Admirals captain Scott Hunter takes his pregame rituals very seriously. In this case, it's not just a lucky smoothie he's craving-it's the man who made it.

Pro hockey star Scott Hunter knows a good thing when he sees it. So, when a smoothie made by juice bar barista Kip Grady precedes Scott breaking his on-ice slump, he's desperate to recreate the magic...and to get to know the sexy, funny guy behind the counter.

Kip knew there was more to Scott's frequent visits than blended fruit, but he never let himself imagine being invited back to Scott's penthouse. Or kissed with reckless abandon, never mind touched everywhere all at once. When it happens it's red-hot, incredible and frequent, but also only on Scott's terms and always behind his closed apartment doors.

Scott needs Kip in his life, but with playoff season approaching, the spotlight on him is suddenly brighter than ever. He can't afford to do anything that might derail his career…like introducing the world to his boyfriend. Kip is ready to go all-in with Scott-but how much longer will he have to remain a secret?

I wanted to see what all the fuss was about and...enh? It was okay, I more or less enjoyed it, but it felt kind of...I dunno. Thin? Shallow? The characters didn't really become *people* to me. There were places where details were left out that could have made a more fully-realized world if they'd been included. They watched "an action movie" together. What movie? How did they feel about it? Why did they pick it?

I felt like the sex was kind of samey-same, even when positions and activities differed, and didn't generally advance either the plot or my understanding of the characters. There were also places where they clearly just needed to TALK to each other and, even though it's kind of understandable given their lack of relationship experience, I found it annoying.

There were some lovely moments, especially

dancing in Scott's apartment after the gala.

So romantic!

A lot of people I know really love this series, so it may be right for you even though I am unenthusiastic about it after reading this book. And if you're one of my friends who does love it, I'd be interested to hear what about it works for you.
