“The Darling Buds of May: The Larkin Novels, Volume 1” is the first book in a series of five novels about the Larkins, a rural family from Kent, UK (where I grew up). The story follows the arrival of Cedric Charlton, an unsuspecting tax inspector, at the door of the Pop Larkin farm. He soon forgets the purpose of his visit as he is distracted by the fun-loving Ma and Pop Larkin and their attractive young daughter, Mariette.

The audiobook is narrated by Philip Franks and has received a high rating. Franks’ narration brings the characters to life with his lively and engaging voice, capturing the essence of the Larkin family and their carefree way of life.

The story itself is a quintessential feel-good country romp that will have you falling wholeheartedly in love with the Larkin family and their carefree way of life. The author, H.E. Bates, is widely recognized as one of the finest short story writers of his generation, with more than 20 story collections published in his lifetime. His writing is descriptive and evocative, painting a vivid picture of rural life in the Midlands of England.

One of the standout features of this audiobook is its ability to transport the listener to a simpler time and place. The descriptions of nature, food, and family life are so vivid that you can almost taste the strawberries and cream and feel the warmth of the sun on your skin. The Larkins’ joy in life is infectious, and their antics will have you laughing out loud.

Overall, “The Darling Buds of May: The Larkin Novels, Volume 1” by H. E. Bates is a delightful audiobook that will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside. The combination of Bates’ skilled writing and Franks’ engaging narration makes for an enjoyable listening experience that will have you eagerly anticipating the next installment in the series. It’s a must-listen for fans of feel-good fiction and those looking for a charming escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Also, the original TV series from 1991, with David Jason, based on these books is awesome (not the follow up series). More info at: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101077/
