Although the young Azish emperor granted her safe haven from an executioner she knows only as Darkness, court life is suffocating the free-spirited Lift, who can't help heading to Yeddaw when she hears the relentless Darkness is there hunting people like her with budding powers. The downtrodden in Yeddaw have no champion, and Lift knows she must seize this awesome responsibility.

I probably should've read this novella BEFORE reading "Oathbringer" but I didn't think that it was crucial to the story for me to do so. I didn't find myself confused in this book, however, nor in "Oathbringer" so perhaps it wasn't horrible of me to overlook this story for a while.

I remembered Lift from her previous appearance in the main books but wasn't sure how I'd enjoy reading an entire story set in her POV. It was good though! I know a lot of readers are annoyed by her character, but I honestly think her personality is refreshing and fun. Definitely over-the-top, but that's just part of her charm.

It was pretty easy to predict who the other Radiant was going to be, but that didn't inhibit my enjoyment of this story. I would've enjoyed seeing some illustrations--to give me a better idea of the city and the people--as in the main books, but I still had a good idea of the setting despite that.

Might read "Oathbringer" again after reading this.

Is Lift one of the greatest characters in the history of Fiction? Maybe?
