Who Would Like This Book:

If you love witty banter, an original take on magic systems, and laugh-out-loud moments, this book is a treat! The worldbuilding is genuinely immersive, with characters who feel real - even when they're being intentionally over the top. Jason, the Australian main character, is snarky and clever, often using humor as a shield against the weirdness of his new world. Fans of LitRPG and progression fantasy, or anyone who enjoys character-driven adventures with a comedic twist, will likely have a blast. Bonus: the audiobooks are highly praised for bringing the story (and Jason’s Aussie sass) to life!

Who May Not Like This Book:

If you prefer serious, no-nonsense protagonists or dislike heavy doses of sarcasm, you might find Jason exhausting. Some readers are put off by the frequent pop culture references, the MC’s moral soapboxes, or the lack of real consequences for his actions. The pace can be slow, especially in early books, and occasional repetition from its web serial roots may bother some. Also, if political or philosophical rants in fantasy throw you out of a story, this series might not be your cup of tea.

Whether you love or hate the snark, He Who Fights with Monsters is a wildly fun and imaginative LitRPG romp - with a unique voice, zany humor, and lots of heart. Just try a few chapters to see which side you land on!

Jason wakes up in a mysterious world of magic and monsters.

It's not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil.

He'll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that's just on the first day. He's going to need courage, he's going to need wit, and he's going to need some magic powers of his own. But first, he's going to need pants.

After cementing itself as one of the best-rated serial novels on Royal Road with an astonishing 13 million views, He Who Fights with Monsters is now brought to you in professionally formatted audio.

simple but I really loved it. fun world, fun characters, and a plot that keeps it all moving along. Just an overall good story, and one I'd suggest anyone picks up.

Main Character was too edgy and npcs felt unreal

This might be the book that maxes out the LitRPG trope of "reading a video game combat log" and it becomes a slog to get through. As the series progresses there are so many characters with so many abilities that the books drag horribly.

First 3 books are amazing. After that they start to go downhill.

Liked the book at the beginning. Read through to about book 4 and then didn't understand the story anymore. I think the author like a lot of other authors in this genre had something to preach in their story and it kind of lost me. Like a normal human being I just pick up a book to enjoy it and not be preached on how I'm supposed to think or view the way of the world. I just didn't know where the character was going and I stopped reading. Even if this book was free on Unlimited on Amazon I wouldn't waste my time with a preachy author. Just tell me a story and get on with it. No one likes to be preached to.

I enjoyed the book as my first introduction into litRPGs. I have always enjoyed the fish out of water stories like this one as well as progression from an average person to a hero. It was well written with a good mix of political intrigue and humor.

Really didn't expect to like the story. I started the story and abandoned it at first but decided to try the audio (because so many people liked this story). That really made a HUGE difference.

Lots of snark and humor. MC, Jason, is very likable though snarky and idealistic/rigid in his belief. But he and is companions are fun to read about and hang out with and contrary to lots of people, I really enjoyed the second arc (book 4-6).

This was good, never mind the naysayers. Some readers complain about how smug the MC is as well as his liberal political views. But I thought this was just part of the set up and added to the storyline.

The world building was good. This is a portal fantasy- wise cracking mc, decent progression and leveling.
