Who Would Like This Book:

If you're into dark fantasy romance with a unique spin on classic myths (think King Midas, but way more twisted), "Gild" offers a fascinating premise. The world is intriguing, the emotional stakes are high, and the journey of the main character, Auren, hooks readers who love slow-burn character growth and transformation. Fans of Sarah J. Maas (ACOTAR) or Jennifer L. Armentrout, and those looking for stories about overcoming trauma and reclaiming power, will likely find themselves hooked and hungry for book two.

Who May Not Like This Book:

Not everyone's golden cup of tea: The first book is almost all setup with very little action, so if you want nonstop plot, you might find it slow or even dull. The writing style (first-person, internal monologue-heavy) isn't for everyone, and some have found the prose awkward or overly tell-not-show. Also, the book contains heavy, dark themes - including abuse and sexual violence - which some readers felt were handled clumsily or used more for shock than substance. If you dislike extensive character wallowing before real plot progression or require romance and spice early on, you may lose patience with this series opener.

A dark, emotional, and atmospheric setup to a much-loved fantasy series. "Gild" is worth a read if you love slow-burn, character-driven tales and can handle heavy themes - but prepare for a slow start before the real magic begins in the sequels.

About:

Gild by Raven Kennedy is an adult fantasy novel that delves into the story of Auren, the gold-plated prisoner of King Midas. Auren, a victim of Stockholm syndrome, is kept confined in a gilded cage within the castle of Highbell. The book sets the premise for the series, exploring Auren's complex relationship with Midas and her yearning for freedom. The writing style is described as steamy, taboo, and a great reimagining of the King Midas myth, with a focus on world-building and character development.

Characters:

The characters, especially Auren, are depicted with complex arcs, though many secondary characters are considered underdeveloped or one-dimensional.

Writing/Prose:

The author's writing style receives a mix of critique, varying from simplistic descriptions to engaging narratives that resonate with certain readers.

Plot/Storyline:

The storyline intertwines elements of dark fantasy, exploring themes of abuse and liberation, particularly through the experiences of the protagonist, Auren.

Setting:

The world is rich with magical realism, showcasing dark royal intrigue, with the protagonist's 'cage' serving both as a physical and symbolic element.

Pacing:

The pacing is largely slow, focusing on world-building and character development in the first book, with more action occurring later in the series.
The lighting is low, deliberate. Just a crackle of flame over promiscuous shapes that move in warm tandem. Seven bodies working all to one sole release, while I’m here, apart, like a spectator for a s...
