The narrative is primarily a series of humorous essays capturing Tina Fey's journey through her life and career, including her family background, early jobs, and experiences in the entertainment industry.

Setting:

The settings range from her hometown in Pennsylvania to the comedy scenes in Chicago and New York City, where she built her career.

Pacing:

The pacing is fast, with quick transitions between anecdotes, although some sections may feel disjointed.
As I nauseously perused “How Shall I Tell My Daughter?” I started to suspect that my mom had not actually read the pamphlet before handing it off to me. Here is a real quote from the actual 1981 editi...

The audiobook includes the actual audio from her famous Sarah Palin sketch on SNL, adding an extra layer of entertainment.

She has a unique perspective on the pressures of motherhood and balancing a career in entertainment, as discussed in her book.

From The Publisher:

Spirited and whip-smart, these laugh-out-loud autobiographical essays are "a masterpiece" from the Emmy Award-winning actress and comedy writer known for 30 Rock, Mean Girls, and SNL" (Sunday Telegraph).

Before Liz Lemon, before "Weekend Update," before "Sarah Palin," Tina Fey was just a young girl with a dream: a recurring stress dream that she was being chased through a local airport by her middle-school gym teacher. She also had a dream that one day she would be a comedian on TV.

She has seen both these dreams come true.

At last, Tina Fey's story can be told. From her youthful days as a vicious nerd to her tour of duty on Saturday Night Live; from her passionately halfhearted pursuit of physical beauty to her life as a mother eating things off the floor; from her one-sided college romance to her nearly fatal honeymoon - from the beginning of this paragraph to this final sentence.

Tina Fey reveals all, and proves what we've always suspected: you're no one until someone calls you bossy.

Includes Special, Never-Before-Solicited Opinions on Breastfeeding, Princesses, Photoshop, the Electoral Process, and Italian Rum Cake!

First, a disclaimer...I love pretty much every single thing Tina Fey does. Every movie. Every appearance on Saturday Night Live. Every media interview. Every 30 Rock episode. It doesn't matter what it is -- I love it.

Therefore, it shouldn't be shocking that I found this book to be absolutely hysterical. Pee-your-pants hysterical. I often found myself in a room alone, snorting and giggling. I would then be forced to run to a neighboring room so I could share the entertainment with my husband. If he wasn't around, I read aloud to my cats.

My favorite lines:

I remember watching Three's Company as a little brown-haired kid thinking "Really? This is what we get? Joyce DeWitt is our brunet representative? She's got that greasy-looking bowl cut and they make her wear suntan pantyhose under her football jersey nightshirt."

When I read fairy tales to my daughter, I always change the word "blond" to "yellow," because I don't want her to think that blond hair is somehow better.

Tina Fey's hilariousness:

On anti-intellectual Politicians:

"Politics and prostitution have to be the only jobs where inexperience is considered a virtue. In what other profession would you brag about not knowing stuff? “I’m not one of those fancy Harvard heart surgeons. I’m just an unlicensed plumber with a dream and I’d like to cut your chest open.” The crowd cheers."

"This made no sense to me, probably because I speak English and have never had a head injury."

"My ability to turn good news into anxiety is rivaled only by my ability to turn anxiety into chin acne."

"It is an impressively arrogant move to conclude that just because you don’t like something, it is empirically not good. I don’t like Chinese food, but I don’t write articles trying to prove it doesn’t exist."

After being forced to ask Sylvester Stallone to speak more clearly:

"I went back outside and manually released my butt cheeks."

It seemed a bit oddly paced at times, but that may be because I read it after surgery and while taking lots of drugs. By the way - it is a great recovery read.

I love wry and underhanded Fey's humor can be. As a female comedian, she is somewhat obliged to address the "women aren't funny" headline that's been popping up in the last couple of years. And she addresses it well. I also love her take on Photoshop and motherhood.

It could have been a bit more polished but again, that might be the drugs talking.

PS - I read the book, not the audio version, but I don't know how to change editions.

Felt as though a majority of the story was Tina defending herself. It could have been great, it was fun and interesting but so, so defensive.

I recently read Tina Fey's book Bossypants, and it was a great read! I found the book to be both funny and inspiring. Tina Fey has a unique and witty sense of humor that comes through in her writing.
