“Fire in the Blood” presents a story of a post apocalyptic world torn apart in 2023 by the “Rift” which occurred when the skies ripped open and the world was destroyed in fire and ash by dragons.

When the novel begins, we meet Claudia Jones, a 25 year old woman who lives as a scavenger in Fort Dallas with her younger sister Amy and her friend Sasha. Claudia is sitting in a jail cell after being arrested for trespassing, theft, black-marketing, and attempting to evade the law. When Claudia is brought for punishment to the mayor of the city, he plans to exile her but at the last minute, the mayor and a captain of the local militia decides to use her as bait to stop dragon attacks that have plagued the city.

After Claudia is left in dragon territory, she is certain that she will be killed by a dragon and that Amy and Sasha will die since she’s not there to protect them. When a golden dragon takes her captive, she is frightened and unsure of her future. As Claudia gets used to her new reality, she discovers that the golden dragon has the ability to become a man.

Chapter five introduces the reader to Kael, the half dragon/half man who has been attacking Fort Dallas. When Kael sees Claudia, he knows immediately that she is his soulmate. Unbeknownst to Claudia, Kael has decided to make it his mission to win her own and accept her role as his mate.

Initially Claudia and Kael have communication problems due to their language barriers and only communicate through the word “No” and gestures. After their relationship becomes sexual, their minds are permanently melded which makes Claudia livid since she wasn’t given a choice in whether or not to be mated to Kael.

The longer that Claudia is with Kael, the more she understands his plight and how disoriented his is due to being ripped away from his home and ending up in a unknown planet. Eventually, Claudia accepts her role as Kael’s mate as well as reunites with Amy and Sasha.

Although I’m not usually a fan of dragon romances, Dixon’s writing style and immersive storytelling has made me a fan and I will definitely be reading the next novels in this series.
