Charming story, it was a good read.
This is an enjoyable novel about the life and detective work of Precious Ramotswe in Botswana. I liked reading of how Precious solved each of her cases using a combination of cunning and skill. Although I don't usually read this genre of book, I'm glad my friend suggested it to me since it was surprisingly good.
I loved learning about the country of Botswana through the eyes of Mma Ramotswe, one of the most emotionally intelligent women of fiction. Mr. McCall Smith paints of vivid picture of the place, the people, and the problems they face. I’ve read most of the series, and it has made me want to visit Botswana! Sadly, Mma Ramotswe will not be there to greet me: she seems very real, but lives only in fiction.
It was a completely different story than I expected. But to my surprise I liked it.
I was expecting a classic detective story, only set in Africa. Meanwhile, it is not quite like that. The main character, Precious Ramotswe, is indeed a detective, she opened the first detective agency in Botswana. But this book is not only about the cases that she is solving, but also about her life and what brought her to the point where she is now.
I also expected that there would be only one mystery case for Ramotswe to solve. But I found a lot of short stories from cases she was solving as a detective. Some are only one chapter long, others take two or three chapters. But all of them are quite short. I usually don't like it, but here not only did it bother me, but I liked this variety.
But as I mentioned, this is first and foremost a story about Ramotswe’s life. From her father's story to the friendships Ramotswe makes in her adult life. Ramotswe is a strong and independent woman who can fight for hers and who believes to find her place in the profession perceived as male. And I must admit that she does it quite well. Even if she has to improvise a lot because she lacks skills.
Finally, it is a story about Africa and Botswana. From the pages of this book you can clearly read the love for this continent, its traditions and culture. Still, the author does not hesitate to openly show what is ugly and cruel. It is a loving picture of Africa, but devoid of illusions. Ramotswe loves her country and that love spreads to the readers.
I've heard so much good about this series before and now understand why. This is a really great and unique story. I will definitely read more books in this series.
While it takes a couple of chapters to orient yourself to a part of the world you have never visited, by the end of this book I was a solid fan of Scottish author Alexander McCall Smith, and thoroughly enamored with Precious Remotswe, Grace Makutsi, JLB Matekoni, and the rest of the totally endearing characters found in this book. Yes, there are mysteries to solve, but no, the whodunnit isn't the point. It's about humanity, grief, absurdity, laughter, morals, friendship, life. Oh, and tea. Lots of tea. After reading this, you will want to visit Botswana.
A relaxing cosy mystery set in Botswana, it's an intriguing and amusing story and you know all will end well so are free to enjoy the interaction between the characters, their thoughts and actions.
