In a world ravaged by demons, a mute protagonist known as the Vagrant embarks on a perilous journey with a baby, a goat, and a powerful sword. The story follows his quest to deliver the weapon to the last bastion of humanity, the Shining City, while navigating through a landscape where human bodies are used like components in a strange jigsaw puzzle. As the Vagrant encounters allies and enemies along the way, the plot unfolds through a mix of action, worldbuilding, and lyrical prose, providing a unique blend of dystopian, sci-fi, and fantasy elements.

The narrative weaves between past and present, gradually revealing the backstory of the Vagrant and his companions, including a rebellious member named Harm and a very stubborn goat. Through the author's smart and beautiful writing, the characters come to life in a devastated world where survival is tough and alliances are crucial. Despite challenges and betrayals, the Vagrant's silent determination and the interactions with his companions add depth and contrast to the dark and gritty setting of the novel.

Characters:

Characters are compelling and complex, with the silent protagonist juxtaposed against a unique mix of allies, including a baby and a goat, each contributing to the story's emotional weight.

Pacing:

The pacing is gradual and requires reader investment, initially feeling fragmented but ultimately rewarding as the narrative builds momentum.
Excited shouts draw a crowd ahead. A mixture of half-bloods and pimps, dealers and spectators gather in force. Platforms rise up in the street, unsteady on legs of salvaged metal. Wire cages sit on to...

Notes:

The protagonist, known only as The Vagrant, is mute and carries a baby and a sword on his journey.
The sword is said to be alive and carries significant power, representing hope for humanity in a demon-infested world.
The story is set in a dystopian landscape ravaged by demons and apocalyptic events.
The Vagrant has companions including Harm, a man seeking redemption, and a stubborn goat, adding humor to the dark narrative.
The book features a unique storytelling style, with limited dialogue from the main character, relying heavily on action and side characters to progress the narrative.
Though the author reveals the backstory gradually, much about The Vagrant's past remains a mystery throughout the book.
The world combines high fantasy elements with futuristic aspects, creating a unique blend of genres.
Notable themes include redemption, the battle against despair, and the struggle to maintain humanity in a brutal world.
The narrative style has been described as both lyrical and sparse, skillfully conveying emotions and imagery despite the lack of dialogue.
The Vagrant is the first book in a trilogy, and its unique premise has garnered favorable comparisons to works by authors like China Miéville and games like Dark Souls.

From The Publisher:

The Vagrant is his name. He has no other.

Years have passed since humanity's destruction emerged from the Breach.

Friendless and alone he walks across a desolate, war-torn landscape.

As each day passes the world tumbles further into depravity, bent and twisted by the new order, corrupted by the Usurper, the enemy, and his infernal horde.

His purpose is to reach the Shining City, last bastion of the human race, and deliver the only weapon that may make a difference in the ongoing war.

What little hope remains is dying. Abandoned by its leader, The Seven, and its heroes, The Seraph Knights, the last defences of a once great civilisation are crumbling into dust.

But the Shining City is far away and the world is a very dangerous place.

A Unique, eldritch, squirmy cold world with very little light left.

Bleak done right, without the need for stereotypical crutches.

Thank you for your work Peter.
