Who Would Like This Book:
This book is a fast-paced, adventure-filled ride through Greek mythology with Percy Jackson and friends at the helm. Fans of clever humor, action-packed quests, and modern twists on classic myths will absolutely love it. The story explores friendship, loyalty, and the challenges of being different, making it relatable (and super fun!) for middle grade readers, especially those who enjoy fantasy and mythology. If you liked the first book, you'll enjoy revisiting Camp Half Blood, meeting new characters (hello, Tyson!), and unraveling new mysteries.
Who May Not Like This Book:
Some readers felt this sequel wasn't quite as magical as the first, pointing to a slightly simpler plot and some predictable elements. Those looking for deep character development or originality equal to the debut may find it a bit formulaic, and adults who prefer more complex fantasy worlds might want a bit more depth. Plus, if you’re looking for high-stakes peril or more emotional resonance, this one keeps things on the lighter side.
About:

The book is described as a rollicking adventure filled with action, humor, and Greek mythology woven into the modern world.
The plot of 'The Sea of Monsters' is fast-paced and focused on a single quest, introducing new characters like Tyson, Percy's half-brother, and providing more backstory for existing characters like Annabeth. The writing style is noted to be engaging, with high adventure well-executed, maintaining the flow from the first book in the series and keeping readers entertained with humor and unpredictability.

From The Publisher:
After a year spent trying to prevent a catastropic war among the Greek gods, Percy Jackson finds his seventh-grade school year unnervingly quiet. His biggest problem is dealing with his new friend, Tyson-a six-foot-three, mentally challenged homeless kid who follows Percy everywhere, making it hard for Percy to have any "normal" friends.
But things don't stay quiet for long. Percy soon discovers there is trouble at Camp Half-Blood: The magical borders which protect Half-Blood Hill have been poisoned by a mysterious enemy, and the only safe haven for demigods is on the verge of being overrun by mythological monsters. To save the camp, Percy needs the help of his best friend, Grover, who has been taken prisoner by the Cyclops Polyphemus on an island somewhere in the Sea of Monsters-the dangerous waters Greek heroes have sailed for millenia-only today, the Sea of Monsters goes by a new name…the Bermuda Triangle.
Now Percy and his friends-Grover, Annabeth, and Tyson-must retrieve the Golden Fleece from the Island of the Cyclopes by the end of the summer or Camp Half-Blood will be destroyed. But first, Percy will learn a stunning new secret about his family-one that makes him question whether being claimed as Poseidon's son is an honor or simply a cruel joke.

I always liked the premise of these books but I didn't originally think I would read them. A Greek and Roman buff from way back when I didn't really think there was a way they could be spun that wouldn't feel like you were cheating them or cheesy. I was wrong. Rick Riordan has my respect. Not only does he not talk down to the reader but he has given so many of the stories,I love, a new twist or a clever disguise. I love that Percy can be a brat just like any kid. It makes him three dimensional and a human being. Hero's aren't and shouldn't be perfect. These books are well written and clever. Great for any age. On to the next book!
still the best one in the series
3.5 stars!
This is my first time reading percy jackson, unlike most people I didn’t grow up with it. That being said, there’s no nostalgia factor for me and I’m looking at it with a more critical eye, so take this review with a grain of salt.
I love percy’s character, he’s easy to root for and super witty. I’m soooo excited for him & annabeth to get their little romance arc. I didn’t love this book as much as the first one, it felt a little too formulaic for me but I still get the hype! Excited to read 3-5!
It had the perfect mix of adventure and humor for me. However, this book somewhat felt like a stepping stone for continuing the series/building the overall storyline plot.
Another epic adventure with our Greek gods and half-bloods, all with Rick Riordan's humor and sneaky plot twists! I really enjoyed this one as well, though it was a slow read for me with the little time I can gather to read it, but this was a nice read! We got more insights into the prophecies that dictate the course of this book and the very last line of the book, oh man, that changes everything. Can't wait to read the Titan's Curse!
loved it
TYSON.
He is a sweetheart and I love him. I kept saying awh everytime he spoke. My jaw was on the floor so much. There were so many tense moments. I absolutely loved this book, it's everything I look for. The adventures in these fantasy places were described perfectly! The scenery was beautiful. I was very depressed at one point and then happy the next then filled with grief and happy again. Perfect book I'd recommend this to anyone. The characters were loveable even the characters that you weren't supposed to. I chuckled so much it's so funny. There's not a flaw in sight.
A story that feels somewhat less important compared to its prequel. I am interested in what is coming.

Characters:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
In my personal opinion, the second book is where this whole series really started to pick up steam. The first book is good. Not great, but good. This one isn't great either but he really starts to dig into what the series is really about. The two dimensional characters from the first book really start to get fleshed out. Percy isn't perfect, he cares very deeply about what people think of him. The interactions he has with one particular character show how he's not mature enough in the beginning to realize that the people you care about and the people that care about you are the only people you need to worry about keeping happy. We even see some depth from characters like Clarisse. It's a glimpse into the way Riordan takes these characters going forward and really brings them to life on the page in future stories.
Worldbuilding:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is probably the part of the series that makes the series so well known. The Greek mythology blending in with the modern world. There's probably not a lot to be said on this subject that hasn't been said a thousand times. It's good, as always. I particularly like bit relating to food and retail chains growing. Very creative.
Plot:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The plot is good. I actually find it to be a really well contained story. I certainly liked the very unusual start of the quest as opposed to just repeating how the quest started from book one. The characters and worldbuilding are definitely the bread and butter of this series but Riordan does a great job of keeping the each story interesting and giving them things to do that don't just feel like rehashing old problems.
Writing:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The writing continues to improve, but I still argue that it shows a really significant increase later. My main complaint with the writing is the same as the first book, in that some sections just feel incredibly rushed. There's one particular spot in this story where the heroes are sidetracked by another familiar mythological baddie. It's so painfully short and irrelevant to the rest of the story that it could have been axed and no one would have ever known the difference. Sometimes the story suffers from having too much shoved into too few pages.
