This series is the Sci-Fi equivalent of the TV Show: Parenthood. I always joked that nothing good could happen on that show without three awful things happening immediately after. The same is true for Darrow and the Republic. Even when you think a twist is good it ends up being awful for everyone involved.

Huge improvement over the earlier books by expanding beyond one POV to include multiple POVs in this entry. Darrow is kind of a huge bummer these days so it was nice to spread the narrative around to three other people… who were also huge bummers most of the time.

You may be asking, “how did you give this book 4 stars. It doesn’t sound like you enjoyed it at all”. I’m not sure how to respond to that criticism besides by saying that a story can still be good even when it’s horribly sad.
