The great city of Ebora once glittered with gold. Now its streets are stalked by wolves. Tormalin the Oathless has no taste for sitting around waiting to die while the realm of his storied ancestors falls to pieces - talk about a guilt trip. When eccentric explorer, Lady Vincenza 'Vintage' de Grazon, offers him employment, he sees an easy way out. Even when they are joined by a fugitive witch with a tendency to set things on fire, the prospect of facing down monsters and retrieving ancient artefacts is preferable to the abomination he left behind.

This took me a long time to get into, but I'm glad I stuck with it. It's an interesting bit of fantasy, with a little mix of science fiction that is really fun to read.

I'm hoping that the extensive world building will mean that the rest of the series will be more gripping.

Wow...that was a very...British fantasy novel.

Also, to quote Louie Duck, "It all really came together in the third act."

I kept plodding through this book, not sure why, because the writing was good even if I didn't feel a connection to the characters. I kept waiting for big things to happen and for the characters to evolve. It paid off in the end--I had to race through the last 70 pages to find out what was going to happen next.

The main problem is that this book is only published on the other side of the pond. No Kindle editions. No American publisher. I was fortunate that I was able to get this book before COVID-19 shut down international shipping. The sequels, however, will take a while to get here and cost more because I had to order them from within the US. Argh.

But that's a minor quibble, I guess. All in all, once it came together, it was great.
