If you've seen the show you pretty much know what to expect here. It's almost a mystery but without enough foreshadowing or clues to really draw you into the plot.

An interesting novel about a monster disguised as a man. Dexter Morgan is handsome and charming as well as a serial killer. Always the loner, Dexter keeps to himself with the exception of his sister Deborah who is a police officer.

Dexter’s upbringing was extremely traumatic and therefore, there are parts of his memory that are missing. Luckily, Dexter was adopted by Harry (a Miami police officer.) Harry sees something dark in Dexter and it is during a camping trip with young Dexter that Harry tells Dexter to embraces that darkness in himself but only direct his dark leanings at bad people.

Dexter’s life is simple in that he works for the police as a blood splatter artist, has a girlfriend for appearances only and likes the occasional donut. However when the moon is full, Dexter lets the “Dark Passenger” take control of him and commits murder.

Through this novel, the reader sees Dexter wrestling between his desire to kill as well as his desire to appear normal. When an string of gruesome murders hit his town, it’s up to him to figure out who the killer is especially since the murders are similar to how Dexter kills people. The novel is dark as well as entertaining and it engages the reader from start to finish.

This wasn't an amazing novel, but I did enjoy it and am glad I read it. It's a morbidly funny tale spun from a fresh idea. I haven't watched the show but other reviewers say it follows exactly. That being the case I'd read the books first then watch the show if you want to see the characters manifested IRL. I'll be reading Dexter In The Dark for sure.
