The victim looks exactly like Cassie and carries ID identifying herself as Alexandra Madison, an alias Cassie once used as an undercover cop. Suddenly, Cassie is back undercover, to find out not only who killed this young woman, but, more importantly, who she was.
The Likeness is a supremely suspenseful story exploring the nature of identity and belonging.

Very very good. A little too long, but really loved it.
a refreshing mix of french's insightful detective stories
(by which i mean mysteries, but also narratives on the mind of a detective)
and a pinch of
secret history
we see cassie from
in the woods go undercover and nearly lose herself in a murder victim who looks exactly like her
it's so secret history and i love it for that
but it's also such a great examination of the mind of a woman who is coming back to herself after a traumatic life event, and finds her way there through someone else's identity
tana french sets herself apart from other crime writers not just by telling great mysteries, but by picking apart what it means to be a detective, what parts of yourself you lose and what you need
she isn't interested in writing the goriest or scariest or twistiest mysteries
she's more interested in showing us the realest characters
