Who Would Like This Book:

If you love epic slow-burn enemies-to-lovers stories with layers of political intrigue, clever banter, and morally complex characters, "Captive Prince" will keep you hooked. The writing is sharp and evocative, the world-building draws on Greco-Roman vibes, and the shifting power dynamics are genuinely gripping. Fans of high-stakes court drama and those who appreciate nuanced, character-driven storytelling - especially within the MM romance genre - will find a lot to love. If you want a story where trust and attraction build painfully slow against a backdrop of ruthless politics, this series is for you.

Who May Not Like This Book:

This book is absolutely not for everyone. The first volume is dark - really dark - tackling intense themes like slavery, sexual assault, violence, and emotional manipulation. Some readers are deeply uncomfortable with the depictions of non-consensual acts and the often brutal world the characters inhabit. There’s little to no real romance in the first book (it's a marathon, not a sprint), and the lack of significant female characters also gets noted. If you prefer your romance on the lighter, fluffier side or are sensitive to intense themes, you may want to give this one a pass or at least check out the content warnings first.

A brutal, addictive political fantasy with masterful slow-burn tension. Not for the faint of heart, but unforgettable if you’re up for a dark, challenging ride.

Notes:

Captive Prince is a trilogy by C.S. Pacat, originally published as a free online serial.
The story is set in a fantasy world inspired by ancient Greece and Rome.

He is betrayed by his half-brother, who sends him as a slave to the enemy kingdom of Vere.
In Vere, Damen becomes the slave of Prince Laurent, the enemy royal who despises him.
The series is known for its exploration of heavy themes such as slavery, rape, and political intrigue.

Ehh.

Super long without actually being long.

There's a pretentiousness to it? But still not good.

I don't understand the point of the pets and the debauchery of Vere. As of now, it didnt really move the story?? Felt unnecessary.

Also a slave is a slave, weird to look down on vere when you had slaves that you slept with??

I'm not in a hurry to continue the series, but probably will anyway.

not understanding all the hate this book gets, not really understanding the cult following either

this book was good but it’s missing something, feels a lot like set up and i hope that’s the case bc there were some points that were pretty mid, will be tuning into book two but i’m a little disappointed in the characters i think

the writing itself is stellar though, 10/10 well done

*internally constantly screaming about what a perfect series this is and HOW has it not been read by everyone already* *while also gently reminding myself that there is sensitive material that isn’t for everyone in this series* *LAURENT AND DAMIANOS THO*

I heard so many good things about this series that I just had to read it. And I'm definitely not disappointed.

However, in the beginning I wasn't really sure about the characters, especially Laurent who in the first tome is not a good part for a lover. Yet, he and Laurent are such interesting and complicated characters.

A minute I finished this book I decided I just have to read the next one.
