Notes:

The Bat is the first book in the Harry Hole series by Jo Nesbø, but it was the last to be translated into English.
The Bat was originally published in Norwegian in the late 1990s but didn't make it into English until 2012.
Harry Hole, pronounced "Hoo leh," is a Norwegian detective with a troubled past and struggles with alcoholism.
Set mainly in Sydney, Australia, the story revolves around the murder of a Norwegian girl and introduces themes of Aboriginal culture.
The book includes various colorful characters such as an Aboriginal detective, a Swedish barmaid, and even a transvestite clown.
Some readers felt that the book lacked the usual dark tone of Scandinavian crime fiction and read more like a travelogue than a thriller.
The narrative often interlaces local Aboriginal stories, creating a mix of crime fiction and cultural commentary.
Many reviewers considered this book weaker compared to later installments, citing a need for tighter editing.
The audiobook version is narrated by Sean Barrett, who is noted for his strong characterizations and accents, particularly for pronouncing Harry's surname.
Despite its mixed reviews, The Bat has garnered interest from fans eager to understand Harry's backstory and development throughout the series.

From The Publisher:

The electrifying first installment of the Harry Hole series.

Inspector Harry Hole of the Oslo Crime Squad is dispatched to Sydney to observe a murder case. Harry is free to offer assistance, but he has firm instructions to stay out of trouble. The victim is a twenty-three year old Norwegian woman who is a minor celebrity back home. Never one to sit on the sidelines, Harry befriends one of the lead detectives, and one of the witnesses, as he is drawn deeper into the case. Together, they discover that this is only the latest in a string of unsolved murders, and the pattern points toward a psychopath working his way across the country. As they circle closer and closer to the killer, Harry begins to fear that no one is safe, least of all those investigating the case.

In this first book about Harry Hole, he travels to Sydney, Australia to investigate the murder of a Norwegian woman and it turns out they got a serial killer on their hands. It was a decent start. Not as great as the standalone I've read by Jo Nesbo but I'm interested in the series and how it will develop over the books. Wasn't over entusiastisk over Harry Hole in this book but think the character can be interesting in other books.

Harry Hole comes on to the scene with a bang in this book - but his patterns here are just as annoying as they are later. The way this guy drinks he should not be 12 books into a murder mystery series. I'm also not crazy about the way women are treated in this series - a little too James Bond-style for me. However, I still find these books compulsively readable and this one is the best so far.
