Has Romance?

Romance is a central element in Jock Row, with a strong focus on the relationship between the main characters.

From The Publisher:

Scarlett is always the sensible one: The sober driver. The planner. The one holding your hair back while you're worshiping the porcelain gods.

Week-after-week, she visits Jock Row with her friends-the universities hottest party scene and breeding ground for student athletes. And if keeping her friends out of trouble, and guys out of their pants, was a sport, she'd be the star athlete.

Being a well known jock-blocker gets her noticed for all the wrong reasons; just like that, she's banned from Jock Row. NO GUY WANTS A GIRL AROUND WHO KEEPS THEIR JOCK FRIENDS FROM GETTING LAID.

"Rowdy" Wade is the hot shot short-stop for the universities baseball team-and the unlucky bastard who drew the short straw: keep little Miss Goody Two-Shoes out of the Baseball House.

But week-after-week Scarlett returns, determined to get inside.

This was a slow burn romance relatively free of drama and with two main characters who were both nice, normal and genuine. I liked the banter between them and I liked the way their friendship and then their romantic relationship unfolded.

That said, something just fell flat for me and I'm not sure if I just wasn't in the mood for a contemporary romance or it was something in the writing that lacked that spark. I couldn't quite put my finger on it. But I think it was more me than the actual story itself.

I liked both Scarlett and Rowdy/Sterling. For all Scarlett is listed as the sensible one and the good girl - she wasn't really. She works hard for her grades but she's cheeky and daring - she's willing to call out bullshit (

The guys her friends were hitting on were lying about winning a championship to impress them and she was like yeah, no you guys so didn't win it was whoever.

) and she totally shut down the bad pickup lines. It was freaking hilarious when she was like dude, don't get offended get better lines. Sterling was arrogant and cocky but he wasn't an asshole which was a nice change. I liked the way they got to know each other by playing Never Have I Ever and Would You Rather. I was amused that she started bringing him food. I would've liked to see them be a bit more outgoing and confident in their feelings but the shy awkward development worked. And Sterling's mum was hilarious.

Overall, a sweet easy read. 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4.
