An Indie Next pick!

Kiela has always had trouble dealing with people. Thankfully, as a librarian at the Great Library of Alyssium, she and her assistant, Caz-a magically sentient spider plant-have spent the last decade sequestered among the empire's most precious spellbooks, preserving their magic for the city's elite.

When a revolution begins and the library goes up in flames, she and Caz flee with all the spellbooks they can carry and head to a remote island Kiela never thought she'd see again: her childhood home. Taking refuge there, Kiela discovers, much to her dismay, a nosy-and very handsome-neighbor who can't take a hint and keeps showing up day after day to make sure she's fed and to help fix up her new home.

In need of income, Kiela identifies something that even the bakery in town doesn't have: jam. With the help of an old recipe book her parents left her and a bit of illegal magic, her cottage garden is soon covered in ripe berries.

But magic can do more than make life a little sweeter, so Kiela risks the consequences of using unsanctioned spells and opens the island's first-ever and much needed secret spellshop.

Like a Hallmark rom-com full of mythical creatures and fueled by cinnamon rolls and magic, The Spellshop will heal your heart and feed your soul.

3.5 stars. I definitely didn't love it like a lot of other readers, but I there were parts I loved--Caz is awesome. Audiobook was great.

Narrator was off for me.

I struggled with this for the first 25%, because the FMC was just ... I don't know. Self-absorbed and abrasive, really. But then it grew into a lovely, sweet fantasy. It's more slice-of-life than some grand adventure, as we watch the FMC start her life over after fleeing a fallen capital city.

In the end, the book is like a lovely, friendly hug.

A lighthearted, adventurous tale of self-discovery and magic, with a female protagonist and a warm, peaceful atmosphere. A cozy read, too cozy or cheesy for my taste, where the dangers were less, and the female protagonist was supposed to be socially awkward, but she turned out fine in some places and overly anxious in some and too confidant in other dangerous situation. Plot, narration, world building and magic system were really good. It would have been better if there was a little more danger, more depth to characters. It was obvious how the story would go, but little mystery or what next (Radane & Search ship captain were not enough, too soft) would have made it a little more interesting.

Happy Reading!!

Absolutely adorable, in my top five reads for the year. I wanted to start over as soon as I finished it—and I want to eat muffins and jam by the ocean on a little island surrounded by friends! It's been a while since I read a book that I just wanted to live inside. I also thought the plot had the perfect amount of tension and stakes to balance out the coziness, and I loved the author's prose. Five solid stars!
